If anything this is an agricultural, farmland/ heartland America reference. This advertisement is a two-page spread featuring a scarecrow and corn plants in the foreground, a vast corn field in the mid-ground and an manufacturing plant of some kind in the distance near the sunset. It is a bucolic scene hearkening to a good and american pastoral ideal - farmers life as clean and productive, and unimpeded by any other productions. In this case, Toyota can coexist in farmland america without compromising the integrity of the land. This is a very interesting approach from a foreign automaker. According to this advertisement, Toyota recycles, has a healthy sense and form plans for corporate environmental responsibility and does no harm to the land. Noticeably absent are cars and people, which certainly leaves them wide open to questions of social responsibility. This ad seems to be appealing to someone who is already engaged in the conversation of corporate responsibility, and who holds the heartland american pastoral ideal as a cultural notion or heart-string to be tugged at.
